Body: in sickness and in health
More recently, illness, pure but not simple, has added itself to the mix in a multi-system sort of way. And the challenges in figuring out exactly what's gone wrong are many. As problems have revealed themselves in the last few years, beginning with reactive hypoglycemia in late 2008, I've documented them here, partly to gain a little clarity on managing complex conditions but mostly to give voice to vulnerabilities I feel but don't normally share with anyone face to face. Better out than in, they say, right? (Oh yes, humor is one way I deal.)
The links below cover the different angles I've examined (and from which I've been examined) within that experience.
Travel: neither here nor there
Since we're no longer in separate places, I blog less often from airports. But we do travel -- together now! -- which is much more fun to write about. So in addition to thoughts on our years of commuting, the links below cover the places we've been as a pair and, in some cases, the adventures that have happened on the way.
Writing: the long and short of it
After graduating, I taught English for a few years and then worked as an editor, which I still do freelance. In 2007, I applied and got into an MFA program at a place I like to call Little U. on the Prairie. I finished my degree in 2011 and have been balancing tutoring and writing on my own ever since.
The following links cover the writing I've done about writing: process, content, obstacles, you name it. It's not always pretty. But some part of me loves it, even when it's hard. And this is the result.

Heart: family and friends
That's what this group of posts is reserved for -- heart. The essential parts of my life whose influences I carry with me, for better or worse. The links below cover what I've written as I've learned how these forces work within me, for me, against me, in spite of me. They anchor me even as they change me, and they keep life interesting.

Grumbling rights
The short version: D left town this morning to throw his brother a bachelor's weekend before said brother's wedding next month. This afternoon, the nagging stitch in my side that started yesterday after lunch turned into an unrelenting pain that still hasn't gone away. A trip to the GI doctor got me some prescription painkillers and orders to return to the hospital in the morning for a thorough ultrasound (the one attempted today wasn't clear enough, so we'll try again when I'm fasting). The hope is that the gallbladder doesn't need to come out.
I'm pretty good at being alone most of the time -- years of living apart from D while we were commuting has trained me well. But this is one of those instances where I really, really wish he were here.

As someone who had their gallbladder out 3.5 years ago - you might feel much better when it finally does go. I know it sounds daunting but I used to suffer such bad stomach trouble and it is now a thing of the past.
Thanks for the email - so I did have the right inkling after all.
Hugs and wish you better

Sherlock -- an update shortly! I'm home in between doctors and the preliminary news is no surgery. Whew.
FF -- I remembered your gallbladder experience when I was talking to the doctor yesterday, especially after your other message. I'm glad having the surgery ended your trouble. It's nice when health problems have a clear, effective solution!
MW -- thanks. D's on the ground now, so at least we have phone contact. I was thinking of you and the kerfuffle, as you put it, that went down while TD was also getting on a plane. What IS it with the timing gods this year??? - September 3, 2010 at 4:17 PM

Thinking of your and your gall bladder. Maybe your innards and bile get themselves in order!
Will D be home soon?

I had my gall bladder out many years ago...did it on a Friday and went back to work Monday. Was able to have it done laproscopically, and it was a piece of cake. I felt much better after. I hope your pain diminishes, but seriously the surgery was one of the easiest and quickly healing of all I've had. Hope D is home soon. I'm sure just having him home will comfort you.

GEW -- D gets home Tuesday morning (I'm supposed to pick him up at the airport and ferry him directly to work, poor guy). That feels quite a ways off from today, but it's definitely closer than it was 24 hours ago. I'm of two minds about this stretch of time as I need it to work on my thesis but wish I weren't so alone while under the weather. Can't have both! Appreciating the virtual company, though.
SuziCate -- I'd heard it's supposed to be a fairly simple surgery. Fortunately, I think that's no longer on the table. Glad it went smoothly for you. Out on Friday, back on Monday! Impressive. One of my former coworkers had it done a few years back and she took a little longer to get back on her feet. Everybody (and every body) is different :) - September 3, 2010 at 8:55 PM

It sucks to be alone when you don't feel well. So I hope you're up to snuff soon.
(Et quant à la chirurgie - je l'ai eue - et c'est vraiment assez simple et assez vite et tu rentres le lendemain, et meme pas de cicatrices.) - September 4, 2010 at 2:38 PM

Pas de cicatrices! That's great, BLW. I didn't realize the incision was that insignificant.
Things are getting better slowly around here. I'll happily take that over things not improving, but yes, I'd also appreciate a return to "normal" sooner rather than later. Thanks for the kind wishes. - September 4, 2010 at 7:38 PM
